Introduction Tzu Chi College of Technology was established in 1989 by Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation, under the direction of Dharma Master Cheng Yen. The Foundation promotes four major missions: Charity, Medical Care, Education, and Culture. Currently the college admits graduates form junior high and senior high schools without restriction as to religion. The college motto is "Be kind, compassionate, joyful, and giving." Since 1990 the college has been run under the leadership of the President, Ms. Fwu-Mei Chang, Ed.D. The administrative departments include Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and General Affairs. There are six academic departments in College, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Early Childhood Care and Education, Health Administration, Radiological Technology and Accounting. The teaching faculty is highly qualified, dedicated, and enthusiastic. All of them meet the hiring standards set forth by the Taiwan Ministry of Education, and have either a master or a Ph.D degree. Tzu Chi College of Technology is dedicated to provide excellent education and training in each of its respective fields. College Honor In a recent national evaluation, the College's Nursing Department, Academic Affairs Department, Student Counseling Unit, and Administrative Support Unit all received the first honors in their respective categories among seventy departments and units from the eleven medical technology and nursing colleges throughout Taiwan. Curricula The curriculum of each program offers both academic education and clinical practice. They are carefully designed for developing professional competence. Students are required to take a prescribed combination of basic-and advanced-level courses in the applied and behavioral sciences integrated to their fields. They are also free to choose from a variety of other courses in order to meet degree requirements. The elective courses include profession-related courses (e.g., clinical pharmacology, nursing administration, gerontological nursing, early childhood special education, physical therapy evaluation, speech and language pathology, and Chinese medicine), Buddhist studies (e.g., flower arranging, tea ceremony, Zen meditation, and sign language), fine arts (e.g., art appreciation, music appreciation, drama, and dance), local minority languages (Ami, Atayal, Fukien, and Hakka), and liberal arts (e.g., psychology, human development, sociology, marriage and family studies, and the Constitution of the R.O.C.). Facilities The library, located in the administrative building, has a fully automated cataloging system. It contains more than 100,000 books, over 600 journal and periodical titles, and about 7,000 audio/visual items including over 800 sets of microfilm. In addition, there are multiple computer capabilities with CD-ROM databases and national and international Internet connections. Labs include a chemistry lab, a biology lab, a microbiology lab, two anatomy and physiology labs, medicine and surgery labs, a neonatology lab, a hydrotherapy lab, an electrotherapy lab, a physical therapy lab, a sensory integration lab, a nutrition lab, numerous nursing labs, two computer labs, an audio/visual lab, and a radiological and imaging technology lab. Other specialized rooms include a faculty computer center, a multi-media computer room, a media production studio, a music chamber, experimental nursery school rooms, a fine arts classroom, a dance classroom, a flower arranging room, a tea ceremony room, a Zen meditation room, and a Buddhist shrine. Classrooms are each equipped with an overhead projector and a slide projector. Athletic facilities include a modern outdoor synthetic running track, basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, pool s, ping-pong s, and a physical fitness weight training room. Student Life Students are encouraged to live in the dormitory. Generally, four students share a dorm room that has built-in desks, bookshelves, and cabinets. Students must wear the college uniform on campus during regular school hours from Monday through Friday. Students must study in their dorm rooms during evenings from Monday through Friday. Each student is a member of a homeroom class that is overseen by a teacher. The homeroom teacher serves as an information provider and a general guidance counselor for all students in the class. Students in groups of nine are assigned to three "Yi-te" mothers, who serve as surrogate role mothers, models and counselors. The Yi-te mothers are members of Tz'u-Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation. At least four of them remain on duty at the college throughout the week to make themselves available to students at any moment. Students are welcome to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities such as the chorus, the marching drum band, the guitar club, the tennis team, the volleyball team, the basketball club, the ping-pong club, the T'ai Chi Ch'Uan (Chinese shadow boxing) club, the drama club, the fine arts club, and the Aboriginal People's Service Association. Student Services The Student Counseling Center has trained counselors on hand from Monday through Friday to provide both individual and small group counseling's. The cafeteria serves three vegetarian meals daily. Since the food program is subsidized by the college, students pay only NT$ 20 a meal. The infirmary provides the minor medical care for students and answers health-related questions. Simple treatments are done by a daily-visiting practioner-doctor on dentist- for free. For more serious health problems, students will be treated at Tzu-Chi Buddhist General Hospital, which is nearby.
